
The John (Bud) Neumann Scholarship of $2500 is given annually in honor of Bud Neumann (1942-2006). Bud was a valued ARDEC employee for 38 years, retiring in 2003. After his retirement he continued his career and passion for what he did by becoming a contracted employee for Subsystems Technologies Inc. where he was employed at the time of his death. Subsystem Technologies, Inc. has generously underwritten the cost of this annual scholarship and authorized Women In Defense to execute the scholarship distribution.
Bud was uniquely dependable and always ready to lend a hand to any job. No task of any size or caliber ever went unfinished when Bud was on the team. The value Bud added to everything he touched is unmatched. The thoroughness and quality of his work were his hallmark. He was an extremely proud employee. He was truly a humble man with enthusiasm for his daily work and a heart warming smile for his peers and all those that crossed his path. He gave 110% to each task he undertook and felt a true sense of accomplishment by fulfilling his duty to the Department of Defense. Bud was drafted during the Viet Nam war serving two years in the Army as An MP, one of which was spent in Viet Nam. When he returned, he began His career at Picatinny as a machinist with one year of technical school under his belt. Over his tenure at Picatinny Bud progressed to a model maker and later to an engineering technician. His potential was limitless and customers from all over requested Bud on their job. One thing was clear; there was no job that Bud would not tackle. Bud considered himself a "hands-on learner" who was following his passion with every challenge he accepted. He had an undaunting nature that drove him to the successful completion of every new adventure. He could assess a situation with integrity and determination and come up with an inventive solution to accomplish a previously thought unsolvable circumstance.
The students who apply for this award need to show a strong work ethic and a dedication to self and community. They need to display compassion, initiative, reliability and teamwork in the projects they are involved in. While academic records must be submitted for consideration, this scholarship is looking for the student with never-ending effort and passion. The student who receives this scholarship will be the one who is happy to be a "spoke in the wheel" and the glue that holds the team together.
